The Faculty of Business and Social Sciences started on a modest scale with the establishment of two Departments which served as some of the pioneering Departments in the University. These are the Departments of Geography and Economics established in 1976 and 1977 respectively. These Departments were part of the then Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In 1981/1982, the Department of Accounting and Finance was established while the Department of Business Administration also came into existence in the 1982/1983 academic session.

During the 1982/1983 academic session, the Departments of Political Science (formerly Government and Public Administration) and Sociology (formerly Sociology and Social Administration) were also established. Therefore, with the coming on stream of these four Departments in 1981/82 and 1982/83 academic sessions, the two earlier Departments, that is, Geography and Economics, were all grouped to become the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. The Faculty of Business and Social Sciences consists of the office of the Dean, the Faculty Professional Programme Coordination office, and six Departments, which run programs leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree in the following disciplines: Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Geography, Political Science, Sociology. All the Departments in the Faculty run at least one Academic and/or Professional Programme at the Master's level, while each of the Departments also runs a Doctoral Programme.

In the year 2013, the Faculty of Social Sciences became separated from the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, and ever since then, the faculty began to govern its affairs within its jurisdiction in the span of the seven departments that currently exist in it. The faculty of social science has been up and doing the vision and mission to improve humanity under its establishment as a motherboard to different human and society courses.
